Nature puzzles show the outdoor world in miniature: bark, leaves, feathers, pebbles, seed heads, shells and the odd patch of moss. Each close-up picks out a surface you would normally walk straight past on a country path or a beach.

In a close-up picture quiz, natural textures are hard to place because nothing repeats perfectly. Every vein, crack and fibre is slightly different, so there is no neat pattern to latch onto. Try asking whether the surface grew, was worn down, or formed over time. Growth tends to show veins, rings or fibres, weathering leaves rounded edges and pits, and slow formation creates layers. Colour helps too: greens and browns point to plants, while greys and creams often mean stone or shell.
