Answer: Moss spore capsules

What you're looking at

Moss spore capsules are the reproductive structures found at the tips of moss plants. You'll find them in damp places like forests, shaded garden corners, and along stream banks. They're tiny, often just a few millimeters tall, and usually go unnoticed by most people walking past.

When photographed under extreme magnification, the capsule's textured surface and geometric structure look completely alien. The close-up reveals intricate patterns, delicate ridges, and a form that bears little resemblance to the small brown or reddish pods visible to the naked eye. This dramatic shift in perspective is why it's so challenging to identify.

Look for tiny, geometric structures with textured surfaces and regular patterns that suggest a natural container or capsule.
