Mineral puzzles cover crystals, gemstones, metal ores and the sparkling structures inside rocks. Close up, you can see the flat faces, sharp edges and flashes of colour that form as minerals grow over thousands of years.
In a close-up picture quiz, they are hard to name because many minerals look alike at this scale, and colour alone can mislead you: quartz, for example, comes in almost every shade. Look at how the surface breaks and reflects light. Flat, mirror-like faces point to crystals, a glassy curved fracture suggests something like obsidian or flint, and a metallic sheen hints at an ore. Layered, flaky surfaces are often mica or slate.
