What you're looking at

A match head is the small, colored tip at the end of a wooden matchstick that you'd find in any household match box. It's something we strike against a rough surface hundreds of times without really looking at it closely. Most people use matches without ever examining what they actually look like up close.

When magnified to extreme close-up, a used match head reveals a surprisingly complex texture of charred, crumbly material with an uneven, almost volcanic surface. The heat from burning creates cracks and crevices that look completely alien when zoomed in, making it incredibly difficult to identify. The discolored, blackened appearance bears little resemblance to the fresh red or blue match head you'd expect to see.

Look for charred, crumbly textures with irregular cracks and a blackened surface in close-up puzzle photos.
