A scratched DVD can often still play perfectly fine because the data is stored in a spiral track so tightly packed that a small scratch might only damage a few bytes out of millions, which the disc's error-correction code can automatically fix and fill in. However, if a scratch goes deep enough to hit the reflective aluminum layer underneath the polycarbonate plastic, that section becomes permanently unreadable since the laser can't bounce back to read the data.
