Matchstick head (macro)

What you're looking at

A matchstick head is the small colored tip on the end of a wooden match stick that you strike to create fire. You'll find them in matchboxes in kitchens, camping kits, and emergency supplies around the world. They're such a common household item that most people never really look at them closely.

When magnified dramatically, a matchstick head reveals a surprisingly complex and bumpy surface texture made up of chemical compounds and binding agents. The extreme close-up flattens the three-dimensional structure and removes all sense of scale, making this tiny object look like an alien landscape. The grainy, mineral appearance and irregular surface pattern bear little resemblance to what our brains expect from something so small and familiar.

In macro photography, watch for grainy mineral textures and irregular bumpy surfaces that suggest small chemical or composite materials.
